The mass media , including television , radio and newspapers, have great influence in shaping people 's ideas

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement

The mass media have a powerful influence in almost instantly providing information about events around the world is largely taken for granted. But in our dependence on the media we have allowed them to mould our notions and opinions of events, places and people. Though few of us probably think about it ,our conceptions of, say ,our elected officials spring from television images and newspaper stories .Most of us will never meet prime ministers or presidents , but anyone who is regularly exposed to the media will have an opinion of them .When it is time to cast our vote, we will make our decision based on how the media portray the candidates . We are similarly swayed by coverage of wars. The media , representing the values of their owners , societies and governments , tend to report wars with a bias; which is the good side and which the bad is determined for us by reporters , editors and commentators, and sure enough the public begins to form opinions that reflect the coverage they see, hear and read in the major media.

The media are also influential in the way they facilitate the spread of culture and lifestyle . The so-called global youth culture , in which one finds young people around the world displaying a common interest  in music, clothing style and films , is an example of the media's enormous sway in this regard. A popular figure such as Michael Jackson would never be so well known were it not for the media's extensive reach into every society on the globe.

Thus  I would argue that the mass media 's influence is certainly great. Indeed, with technological advancements such as the Internet bringing even more forms  of electronic media to our homes and workplaces , it is likely the media 's influence will grow even stronger.

سوالات آیلتس آکادمیک ماه مارچ 2010 - استرالیا

  • Listening test

Section 1. a conversation between a club receptionist and a person who was inquiring about purchasing a membership for his friends

Questions: filling in the gaps on a form that showed the address of the club, monthly fees, joining fee, available facilities, telephone number

Section 2. A phone conversation about tourist packages to visit ‘SOME’ Caves

Questions: filling in the gaps on a form that described prices of the ticket per person and per group, history of the caves, various extra activities offered to the tourists

Section 3. A conversation between a tutor and two students

Questions: multiple choice questions about type of essays students were supposed to write, word limit, main topic of the essay, etc

Section 4. a Lecture about significance of airports . Lecturer has been speaking about 5 different scenarios of what will happen with the airports in the future

Questions: Choose a title for each scenario. It wasn’t easy to listen to the speaker and at the same time keep scrolling for the title of the scenario, as written titles were very much paraphrased and sounded differently in the recording

Reading test

Passage 1. Effects of junk food advertising on children.
Passage 2. Shoemaker-Levy 9, comet that hit Jupiter.
Passage 3. Research paper about talent as a quality to be assessed by employers.
This was quite an interesting text, as it questioned conventional methods of measuring intelligence as ineffective to distinguish talented people. Example of Bach was given. Bach was an amazing composer, however, he wasn’t recognized for a while. The standards of recognition in music during those days had to change in order to appreciate Bach’s greatness. Ironically, this text was included in IELTS, which is a test measuring intelligence in a very conventional way

Writing test

Writing Task 1

The table shows the maximum, minimum and average annual salaries in 5 different sectors in "someland" in 2006. Write a report to a university lecturer describing the table below
IELTS Writing Task 1 Table

2- تافل دکتری در ایران نمونه ی تغییر یافته ای از تافل PBT است که در آن فقط گرامر ، درک مفهوم و واژگان پرسیده می شود.
